Anti-virus " tips "

Many well-meaning Internet users are circulating an anti-virus " tip" that, on its face, appears to provide a useful method for combating email viruses.

There are numerous variations, but the basic advice involves creating a contact in your email program's Address Book with the name 'Virus Alert' and an invalid email address such as 'AAA' or '000' or '000!' (or any
combination of characters that ensures that the new contact is the first one listed in your Address Book).

The theory is that, should your PC become infected with an email-borne virus that starts sending copies of itself to everyone listed in your Address Book, the very first email address it tries to send itself to will generate an error message (because 000! etc. isn't a valid email address), thereby alerting you to the presence of the virus.

Unfortunately, this tip is largely useless. It may be effective against some of the earlier, less advanced email viruses, but it is not effective against the more recent email viruses.

More importantly, the tip does nothing to protect your PC ( or MAC ! ) from becoming infected; that is, it only helps AFTER your PC is infected with a virus (i.e. after the damage to your own PC is already complete).

The best defence against viruses is to buy, install and use anti-virus software.

Nigerian scam letters

There have been many reports, both from members and in the media generally, that Internet users around the globe are receiving scam letters purporting to be from the family of ex-Nigerian government ministers seeking assistance to smuggle millions of dollars out of the country. In a sign that scammers keep an eye on current events, some variations of the scam letters purport to be from Afghanistan politicians or US soldiers based in Iraq, similarly seeking assistance to smuggle funds.

Despite the fact that such letters have been circulating for many decades, each wave of letters attracts hundreds of gullible individuals, a some of whom end up out of pocket.

The scam letters share a number of common elements:

(a) They mention large sums of money.
(b) They request assistance in transferring money, in return for which a commission is promised.
(c) They request your bank account details (into which money will purportedly be deposited).

Once you provide your bank account details, however, the scammers can create bogus payment authorities and steal money from your account.

You should never respond to such emails. Your best option is to delete them upon receipt.

Various State, Territory and Federal Government consumer authorities joined forces to launch a scam-information Web site - ScamWatch - which offers
details of commonly circulating scams and information concerning where you can report scams.

'Anti-Parasite' Web browser check

A number of members have emailed recently reporting odd problems with their Web browser, such as advertising appearing when visiting Web sites that do
not usually display advertising, changes to their default browser settings and random appearances of pop-up windows displaying adverts for casinos and adult services.

Some Web sites and popular Internet tools make unauthorised "modifications" to your Web browser by downloading and installing small programs that launch automatically each time you start your Web browser. ( See : Avoid www.venusseek.com above . )

Such programs can be annoying - they have been labelled "parasite" programs - and most people do not know that they have made their way onto their computer.

An "anti-parasite" Web site - Parasite Check - can perform a quick, non-invasive check of your Web browser to detect the presence of parasite software. If any telltale signs are found, you will be presented with instructions for removing the software.

Kill The Nag Sites - From Nonags

It started with adult sites which most of us visit by accident, but lately it's getting quite spread, many web sites have been using scripts in order to prevent their victims (oops, I meant visitors) from leaving their site, every time you try to close the window or go to another site a new window pops up. If you have a slow connection you can usually get out of it and close the second window before it has a chance to load the new code, but if you're on a fast connection like cable or ADSL it can get very nasty, dozens and sometimes hundreds of windows will pop up before you can close the nag site down and sometimes you might even have to reboot the machine to get rid of it.

So here's a little script, all contained inside the link, that will help you close that window next time. You can install the script in a couple different ways or both if you want.

(1) Drag the "Kill-Nagsite" link below to your personal Links toolbar to create a new button.

(2) Right-click on it to add it to your Favorites menu.

In MS Internet Explorer you may get a general safety warning because you are adding a small snippet of code to your favorites menu, just answer "Yes" for the link to be installed.

If you're using Internet Explorer you can even assign shortcut keys to any item in the Links bar or Favorites by right clicking on it and selecting "properties", this way when you get a window with no toolbars or menu bar (yep they can do that too) all you need to do is hit your Shortcut key combo.

You can block messages from a particular sender or domain. The domain is the name following the @ symbol in an e-mail address.

When you block a sender or domain, no e-mail or news message from that sender or domain will arrive in your Inbox or in the news messages you read. E-mail from blocked senders goes directly into your Delete folder. Newsgroup messages from blocked senders are not displayed.
