Spanking was a recurring discussion topic in the press over the years , it was taken a part of mainstream life and not subject to the political correctness of the last few decades .

WIFE SAY'S 4TH OF JULY
SPANKING OK.
The complaint brought against John James Edyk of 183 North First Street in the
Court of Special Sessions by his wife was dismissed today. Mrs. Emma Edyk
changed her mind and said it was okay for him to spank her.
Mrs. Emma Edyk told the court through her lawyer, Mr. Spiro that it was okay for
her husband to spank her. The punishment was not severe, neither was it cruel,
and she says her husband acted within his rights. She desires to withdraw the
complaint and will consent that he go free.
In the complaint filed Mrs. Edyk's Lawyer Mr. Spiro said, " Mr. Edyk was
celebrating Independence Day and came home feeling happy......Mrs Edyk remonstrated
him because of his hilarity. At bedtime just after completing her nightly
prayers and about to get into bed, she felt obligated to remonstrate him again
about the evils of alcohol. Mr. Edyk then picked her up, sat on the edge of the
bed and laying her face down across his lap began spanking in the old fashion
way. The spanking was not severe but humiliating. Mrs Edyk had not been spanked
in the old fashion was since she was a schoolgirl of seventeen.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
THE ART OF SPANKING
To the Editor:
W.C. asks if spanking is not a proper punishment for girls until a certain age.
I was born in England, and in that country the birch-rod and "taws"
were commonly used as instruments of correction in my girlhood, and the limit of
fourteen was not considered.
I well remember at a boarding school in Brighton, I was compelled to submit to a
most painful application of the birch when I was past seventeen.
It is know that there are in England, at the present time institutions to which
intractable girls of quite mature ages are sent by parents or guardians, with
the understanding that corporal punishment shall be administered, and it is
claimed by those having experience that one good sound whipping has cured a girl
of faults where every other means have failed.
For my own part I must say that I favor the rod-do not think it has ever been or
will be much used in this country. Yet I should like to see the subject
discussed.

STILL SPANKED BY HER MA
To the Editor:
In regard to the question as to whether it is right for parents to punish older
girls by spanking, please publish the following which is my experience. Ever
since I can remember whenever I did anything wrong my mother would take me
across her knees and administer a sound spanking. She has kept this up and even
now, though I am eighteen years old, she still punishes me by taking me across
her knees and spanking me with the back of papa's large hairbrush. It is a
harmless as well as effective method to punish, and many times I have been kept
from doing wrong for fear of the stinging five minutes across mother's knees. As
to age that has nothing to do with it whatever, for there is no reason why a
child that has been spanked at seven for an offense should not be spanked for
the same offense at eighteen.

WANTS ANOTHER WIFE TO SPANK
To the Editor:
"May Dowling" experience and reasonable ideas about spanking gave me
much satisfaction and pleasure. When she realizes the blessings of spankings at
eighteen, I think she will become a good housewife and mother, and I would like
to form her acquaintance. My late wife did not enjoy the opportunity of a good
education before I married her. I had to make good the want, and when she at
twenty had submitted herself to my hearty spanking, she felt relieved and
cheerful, the spirits having been chased from her mind. She was always unhappy
when I neglected this sweet duty toward her and suspected that i had become
indifferent to her and did not love her anymore.

BLAMES US FOR SPANKING
To the Editor :
I think it is real mean to print letters like that one of "Parent's"
that was in last week. Auntie read it to me and said she was going to take his
advice and in the future do her duty. I am Parlor Maid at a hotel and was never
whipped in my life, but yesterday Bridget made me mad and I told her to
"shut up" and auntie heard me. She made me go to my room and then she
came with one of her knit slipper and leather sole, and, thanks to
"Parent" put me across her knees and gave me an awful spanking and
made me go to bed. "Parent" is too big to be spanked himself. Is that
that the reason he thinks it is so good for young people?
